In our course “For The Love of Musicals,” we learn that “Rock of Ages” is an example of a jukebox musical – one that features music of a particular time period or artist.
One of the activities we offer is a chance to match the song from “Rock of Ages” to the original artist who made the song famous. In the film version of “Rock of Ages” – Harden My Heart is sung by Sherrie Christian played by Julianne Hough. The song was originally recorded by American rock group Quarterflash. This is one of 25 songs in the course activity.
In the final week of our Cooking and Nutrition (Fall Flavors) course we watch videos about how pumpkins grow and cook pumpkin bars with Sarah’s Great Day.
Do you know how to tell the difference between a fruit and a vegetable?
With the help of Dr. Smarty and Fooducate we talk about the importance of reading nutrition labels in the Cooking and Nutrition course.
The exercises on this topic are designed to appeal to people on different levels of education. The Dr. Smarty video is on the lower level while the Fooducate worksheet is more difficult.
We use different skills and tools to cook. It’s important to understand what tools we need to measure the amounts of foods we use in a recipe.
In the Cooking and Nutrition course we look at different measuring tools and the math involved with measuring ingredients and nutrition information on processed foods.
In week 5 of our “For the Love of Musicals” course we look at four musicals that won Tony Awards.
One of those that we look at is “A Chorus Line.” We add a bit of exercise and fun to the unit by offering three YouTube videos that teach students dance moves. The chosen videos cater to beginners, advanced, and expert dancers.
Many adults with Down syndrome participated in some kind of “life skills” training during their school careers. In the Cooking and Nutrition course, we reinforce some of the knowledge gained in those courses.
In week 6 we have a matching quiz that tests student’s knowledge of kitchen action words. The quizzes in our courses are set up to reinforce positive answers, allowing them to keep trying until they get the correct answer.
We also look at abbreviations commonly used in the kitchen.
The “Mouth of the South” – Jimmy Hart is one of the people we talk about in week 8 of the “Let’s Get Ready to Rumble” course when we look at “Managers, Valets, and Tag Teams.”
Hart was known as a manager of champions, including Hulk Hogan and The Heart Foundation.
When we look at “The Lion King” in week four of our “For The Love of Musicals” course, one of the activities challenges students to identify some of the animals featured in the epic Disney film.
This is one of the ways we combine learning and fun in our courses for self-advocates!
In week 2 of the “Let’s Get Ready to Rumble” course we explore the World Wrestling Entertainment Hall of Fame.
We talk about the different ways you can be inducted into the Hall, and look at some of the best know members.
The Warrior Award is given to someone who has “exhibited unwavering strength and perseverance, and who lives life with the courage and compassion that embodies the indomitable spirit of the Ultimate Warrior” (James Brian Hellwig) who died of a heart attack three days after being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in New Orleans four years ago.
This year, the award will be presented by Warrior’s widow to 15-year-old Jarrius “JJ” Robertson, double liver transplant survivor and longtime WWE fan.
